Peer Advocacy Coordinator

Job Summary: The Peer Advocacy Coordinator will be the lead peer advocate at the Resource Connection Center of the Metro Suburban Recovery Learning Community (RLC) and will be responsible for the development of peer advocacy trainings to develop a corps of peer advocates with expertise on specific issues such as back to work finances, housing, benefits and mental health legal rights. Additionally, the Peer Advocacy Coordinator will provide supervision, mentoring, support and ongoing training for these hourly peer advocates. The Peer Advocacy Coordinator will also organize grassroots groups in the Metro Suburban region to engage in systems advocacy and will train hourly peer advocates in community organizing.
Supervisory Relationships: The Peer Advocacy Coordinator will be supervised by the Program Coordinator.
Employment Status: 32 hours per week
Salary Range: Starting Salary $28,000
Duties and Responsibilities:
Training
* Develop & compile training materials, both on individual & systems advocacy issues.
* Develop curriculum for training series including Back to Work Finances Advocacy.
* Recruit consumers/survivors to be trained to provide peer advocacy.
* Schedule, conduct &/or recruit consultants to provide trainings on peer advocacy.
* Plan and conduct workshops on various advocacy topics to be given in the community.
Other Duties
* Provide individual and group supervision, support, mentoring and ongoing training to hourly peer advocates.
* Provide peer advocacy, trauma-informed, culturally sensitive peer support, and information & referral to consumers calling or walking in to the Resource Connection Center.
* Organize grassroots groups throughout the region to engage in systems advocacy.
* Assist in Healthcare Access and Improvements initiative.
- Otherwise specified duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
Qualifications:
* Experience as a mental health consumer/psychiatric survivor important.
* Prior experience providing advocacy.
* Prior organizing experience.
* Prior training experience.
* Knowledge of public benefits & subsidized housing programs helpful.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Supervision experience necessary.
* Familiarity with core values of the recovery movement.
* Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation with ability to travel regionally.
- Ability and willingness to transport fellow consumers.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
* Knowledge of Department of Mental Health Human Rights system a plus.
* Massachusetts Peer Specialist Certification a plus.
* Understanding of the dynamics of oppression.
* Ability to work as a team.
* Must have a strong commitment to the consumer movement.
* Ability to juggle several tasks at once and solve problems creatively.
* Being Bi-lingual/Bi-cultural a big plus.
