Congratulations to Margo McMahon, Ed.D., Human Rights Co-Coordinator for the Department of Mental Health in Western MA. who received the Isiah Uliss Award for advocacy and leadership on Dec. 4th from the MA. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Assn. at Holy Cross College.

Margo is currently the Human Rights Co-Coordinator for the DMH Western MA Area Office and a Wellness Recovery Educator and Certified Advanced Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Facilitator. Dr. McMahon is an individual with lived cross-disability, trauma and addiction recovery experience. She first became active in the mental health, trauma and addictions recovery movement in the mid-1970’s. In 1985, she organized and founded/ Women Finding A Voice/, the first women’s self-help advocacy group in Western MA and the /New England Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) Support Network /for women trauma survivors.

Dr. McMahon has worked as a practitioner, manager, educator and consultant in the mental health and cross-disability field for over 29 years. She has provided consultation and training locally and nationally on numerous topics related to human rights, trauma, recovery, spirituality and cross-disability advocacy. Her recent work focuses on increasing the awareness of the value of Certified Peer Specialists in the mental health system; the importance of peer support in one’s recovery; the development of Peer Run Respitesin MA; Mary Ellen Copeland’s Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP); along with the importance of Medical and Mental Health Advance Care Planning and Advance Directives. She is a unique collaborative trainings involving individuals with lived experience in mental health, trauma, and addictions recovery and professionals.
